Aunty Lilikoi Passion Fruit Products
While exploring the historic town of Waimea on the island of Kauai, we visited the local company, Aunty Lilikoi. Aunty Lilikoi is a manufacturer, wholesaler, and retailer of food and body care products made with passion fruit- locally known as Lilikoi, located in the heart of Waimea. This little shop is a stop you will not want to miss on your visit to Kauai.
A Brief History
In 2001, the husband and wife team of Elpidio and Lori Cardenas purchased Aunty Lilikoi when it was only a trademarked name and five product recipes. In the past decade, through their hard work and dedication, they have grown the product line to include 46 items from food to body care products. These products are available not only at their cute little store, but also on-line.
During our visit, we got to meet Lori, while she shared information about Aunty Lilikoi’s products and let us try many samples of their products. Everything was so delicious; it was hard to narrow it down to just a few to bring back to Portland with us. Luckily, they have a great deal for shipping items to your door so we were able to purchase more and didn’t have to worry about anything breaking in our bags.
Award-Winning Passion Fruit Products
We’ve had their Passion Fruit Butter in the past and love it. I’ve even been known to eat it straight out of the jar with a spoon. If you like lemon curd, you will LOVE Passion Fruit butter.
Aunty Lilikoi’s commitment to their product development has resulted in two award-winning products; their Passion Fruit Wasabi Mustard and the Passion Fruit Wasabi Dressing. The Passion Fruit Wasabi Mustard won the coveted Grand Champion Trophy and Gold Medal at the 2005 Napa Valley Mustard Festival World-Wide Mustard Competition beating out mustard giants Grey Poupon, French’s, Morehouse, and Guldens, along with 300 other entrants from 19 states and 4 countries. The Passion Fruit Wasabi Dressing won its first medal- a bronze medal- during the 2004 World-Wide Mustard Competition. As of March 2012, both products have won a sum of 10 medals and 1 Grand Champion Trophy since first entering the competition in 2004; winning at least one medal per year for eight of the last nine years.
We tried both during our visit to Aunty Lilikoi and can vouch for their amazing flavors! The wasabi is not overpowering and is a background essence with Passion Fruit still being the main flavor that comes through. Trust us, these aren’t hot in any way.
Everything we tried from Aunty Lilikoi’s product lines we enjoyed. Our only regret is that we did we did not get a bottle of their Passion Fruit Teriyaki Sauce developed by their son during his sophomore year of college or a bottle of the Passion Fruit Massage Oil. If only we had more room in our box; sounds like another order is in our future!
Three days after returning from our time on Kauai, we received our shipment straight to our door from Aunty Lilikoi. We were happy to see how well everything was packed and nothing was broken. We also liked having one less (make that 12 less things) to worry about while packing for our return flight. If anything had broken in our shipment, all we had to do was let Lori know and she would have re-shipped it to us. It’s important to her to make sure all Aunty Lilikoi customers are happy with their purchase.

Lilikoi Chiffon Pie
1 deep 9 inch pie shell, baked
1 Tbsp. and ½ tsp plain gelatin
¼ cup water
1 cup sugar
½ cup Aunty Lilikoi Unsweetened Passion Fruit Juice
½ tsp. salt
4 beaten egg yolks
5 egg whites
1 8 oz bottle whipping cream
Prepare pie shell. Soak gelatin in ¼ cup water and set aside. Mix ½ cup sugar, ½ cup Aunty Lilikoi Unsweetened Passion Fruit Juice, salt, and egg yolks. Cook in double boiler until thick like custard. Stir in soaked gelatin and let cool. Whip egg whites until stiff. Slowly beat in ½ cup sugar. When cooling and custard begins to thicken, beat and whisk until fluffy. Fold in egg whites and whip cream. Fill pie shell and chill. Additional whipped cream may be used as a topping.
Lilikoi Cranberry Sauce
1 – 12 oz. bag cranberries
½ cup Aunty Lilikoi Passion Fruit Syrup
½ cup brown sugar
Clean, sort, and discard damaged berries.
Boil cranberries in Aunty Lilikoi Passion Fruit Syrup and brown sugar until they pop. Remove from heat and let stand until cool. Refrigerate. Serve chilled. Serves 6.
Lori says this cranberry sauce will change your life and you will never want any other, (especially the canned kind) ever again.
