Coconut Glen’s on Maui

Coconut Glen’s on Maui

As you come around one of the many 620 hairpin turns along the Road to Hana, you will get your first insight into Coconut Glen’s on Maui. Hanging from the branch of a rainbow eucalyptus a sign reads, “We are the music makers”- a quote used by Willy Wonka. Around the bend, you know you are about to find the Land of Ice Cream.

Before you near Hana town, just past mile marker 27, you will drive upon a little shack selling the culinary delights of coconut ice cream, coconut candy, and fresh coconuts for drinking. Coconut Glen’s is a local Hawaii company based out of Hana selling what we believe to be the world’s best coconut products. When you see their big welcome sign and open sign out, pull into their little gravel parking lot to sample some of the best ice cream you will ever have.

Coconut Culinary Delights

Glen’s coconut ice cream and coconut candy is all handmade from fresh coconuts off the island of Maui. All products are natural, organic, gluten free, and vegan. Don’t let the vegan part scare you off, you won’t even miss that it’s not made with dairy.

The menu board at Coconut Glen’s made it hard to pick just one, so we got three!

The first thing you will notice when stepping into the Big Dumb Coconut Stand is a menu board with an abundance of flavors. With so many flavors to pick from, it can be a bit overwhelming. Thankfully, if you ask nicely, they will let you try a few samples before purchasing.

We did just that and ended up sharing Lilikoi (passion fruit) and Original Coconut. Both servings came loving served in a real coconut shell with a chilled spoon made from the husk of the coconut making them a truly unique food lovers experience. They were so good, we also got a scoop of Pineapple Curry to share.

Coconut Glen’s Story

As we dug in, the guy behind the counter told us Glen’s story of being a classically trained chef who had worked around the world before coming to Maui to use his culinary skills to create the unexpected confections of his coconut ice cream and candy on his sustainable hillside farm. Believing that it’s impossible to be in bad mood while eating ice cream, Coconut Glen has made it his personal goal to serve up smiles, one scoop at a time!

Eating the delicious Lilikoi ice cream.

Savoring each bite, we quickly agreed this really was the “best ice cream on the planet”. The ice cream is made with all local fruit in a base of coconut milk. This incredible ice cream comes in many other flavors, such as, Pistachio Nut, Chili Chocolate, and Ginger Lemongrass. A wonderful jungle treat for only $5 per serving.

While sharing our final scoop, Glen drove by in a pick-up giving a wave before he headed into town. Other visitors stopped in for their own ice cream, candy, and fresh coconut juice. The ice cream itself is reason enough to stop at Coconut Glen’s, but the music makers you will meet, and magic in the company’s very mission and presence will make you want to come back for more.

Before you leave, make sure to grab a bag ofrtwo of the best coconut candy you will ever taste for the road. If they have the new Lychee Hibiscus flavor, be sure to give it a try. I came up with it for a contest Coconut Glen had a few months back. Let me know what you think of it!

  1. I always have trouble traveling with my sister because my main focus is visiting all the ice cream shops and she’s a vegan. I’ve never seriously wanted to go to Hawaii before – I’m too busy exploring north of 60 – but no one told me that’s where the magical paradise of vegan ice cream land was!

    • I promise Hawaii is one of those places that changes you. You should for sure go, Jess. Especially for the ice cream. You will never know it’s vegan and your sister will be delighted.

    • I’m sorry you missed it, too. It’s a great place to stop on the Road to Hana. And I agree on staying in Hana for a few days. I recommend to everyone to do that.

  2. I love that they use so many natural flavors. I can’t wait to visit them the next time I go to Maui – coconut will be at the top of my list.

  3. YUM! It sounds so good! You should get some sort of kick back for selling his products so well!! Can’t wait to have some.. and what a great story :)
