Getting Debt Free: August 2013 Recap

Getting Debt Free: August 2013 Recap

Sometimes, we can’t believe how quickly another Getting Debt Free recap comes around. The past month was one of those times. This time we are looking at our Getting Debt Free August 2013 Recap. Was it as good as, July? No, it was more like June.

August Progress

As we move along in our list of debt, we know there will be more months like this where we make progress in paying down debts, but nothing gets paid off in full. That’s just the reality of working on bigger debts. More is owed on them so they take longer to pay off.

Nothing happened with credit scores, either. They just stayed the same as the month before. However, our credit card utilization did drop another 2%. From where we were at the beginning of January 2013, it has gone down 21%.

Ting Phone Service

I have to rave about our new phone service with Ting some more. Our phone bill went down even more! We have 4 people on our plan and use to spend just under $200 per month. This month was only $54. Yes, $54 for 4 people to talk, text, and surf the internet.

Want to get in on these amazing savings? Ting is still giving AfterGlobe readers $25 that can be used either towards a device or towards a service credit! All you have to do to take advantage of this great deal is click on the link to get hooked up through AfterGlobe. What are you waiting for? You could start saving money, right now!

Getting Debt Free August

Every coin counts when paying off debt. We may not have made a ton from our garage sale, but we still made progress.

Selling Our Stuff to Get Out of Debt

We had a garage sale this past month to sell some smaller items to fund paying down our debt. Unfortunately, it got rained out and we didn’t make very much from it. Everything for sale at the garage sale was items we weren’t willing to hold on to, so Drew loaded it up to be donated. At least we scored a nice tax write-off from it.

Since our garage sale got rained out, we took that time to list some larger items on Craigslist. We sold almost everything we listed. The couple things that did not sell, we will be re-listing with better pictures and descriptions.

Articles on Traveling While in Debt to Come

With our debts that still need to be paid off having bigger balances; we realized that we won’t have as much to share in our progress towards getting debt free every month. Instead, starting this month, we will be moving to quarterly updates. In lue of those updates, there will be a different financial post with information on how to get debt free or to travel while paying off debt. If there is a topic you’d like us to cover in this category, please, let us know.

As of the end of August 2013, we have 6 debts paid off in full and 11 more to go. We started working towards becoming debt free in January 2013. Once we have paid off all of our debt, all of our funds will go into savings to travel the world.

  1. Incredibly smart to get out of debt. I just paid off my house and it was a great feeling to no longer have a mortgage. I commend both of you!
